Love! Friendship! Magic!

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Sometimes (and by sometimes, I mean all the time) I want to read a book that deals with the most fundamental questions of good and evil, love and hate, forgiveness and retribution, and I want those themes to be plopped into a world that the author has wholly created.  Listen, I also hate it when someone compares a book that just happens to have magic in it to Harry Potter, but in the case of Novik's Uprooted, those comparisons fit.  Not only does Novik's book include magic (!), it's also beautifully written and focuses on an incredible, kick-ass woman who saves the day in a big, big way.

This is a stellar book that has the potential to be a classic of the fantasy genre, and I've recommended it to my husband, my Sister-in-Law, and anyone who has decided to read this post.

Perfect If You: Want to read about strong womanhood and female friendship (and that should be everyone); like some romance with your wizard literary fare; fantasize that you are a sorceress and hope with all of your heart that you aren’t a muggle (there I go with Harry Potter again).
